How to sleep when it’s hot. 7 tips on staying cool as a cucumber

Too high temperatures don’t let you sleep at night? Fear not – you’re not alone. People all over the world struggle with the same problem. Fortunately, there are some simple steps you can apply and cool down your bedroom.

Perfect sleep temperature should be between 60 and 67 degrees Fahrenheit or 18-22 degrees Celsius. But if  you live anywhere in Europe or the US and your apartment isn’t equipped in an AC unit, such temperature is almost unseen, even in the middle of the night. AC can be pretty expensive to install, but there are alternatives.

  • buy a box fan

It won’t cool down the temperature as efficiently as an air conditioner, but it’s the next best thing. You can set it in an open window, so that a box fan would suck cool air into the room.

  • mix your box fan with ice

If you don’t want to sleep with windows open you still can lower the temperature in your bedroom. Just fill some bowl or a pan with ice cubes and put it in front of your box fan. It should create a nice cooling breeze.

  • keep your windows shaded

It would be perfect to have some tall trees giving shade, but not everyone has so much luck. What you can do instead, is buy window blinds. They won’t let so much heat inside, so you’ll get to enjoy your evening.

  • use a wet sheet

If you don’t want to cover up your windows with dark shades, you can use a wet sheet. Hang it in front of an open window and enjoy a low temperature.

  • use your hot water bottle

Just fill it with water and instead of heating it, put it in the freezer. You’ll enjoy a nice cold ice pack.

  • put your linens in the freezer

It’s best to cover them with a plastic bag and cool down in your freezer for a couple of minutes. It won’t keep you cool all night, but at least will take the edge off.

  • buy a cooling pillow or  a cooling mattress topper

One side of such pillows are covered with a cooling gel, that disperses your body heat. You should be able to fall asleep easily and stay asleep during the night. A mattress topper should absorb your body heat when it’s too hot and release it, when the temperature drops. Just make sure it’s made of natural substances.
